Film Screening + Discussion: Dark Money

Join us for a free screening of the PBS POV film “Dark Money” which explores how anonymous campaign contributions impact the integrity of American elections and the role media play in the process.

Pop-Up Media Literacy Interviews

A team of three undergraduate students will be conducting and filming interviews throughout Media Literacy Week across Saint Vincent College’s campus. The interviewing team will appear at random times at different locations on campus asking students about their media use, understanding of media literacy, and other probing questions to encourage students to think more critically about their media use.

Speed Friendshipping

In a society where our phones are becoming our best friends, speed friendshipping can remind us that face-to-face interaction is important and should not be dismissed! A simple 10 minute commitment, this event encourages students to put away their phones and meet a variety of new people (and possibly future friends) in a speed dating-style environment.

To celebrate Media Literacy Week, Oviatt Library and the Journalism Department are hosting a screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism is Turning the Internet Against Democracy. Film Screening: I Robots

Screening of a film by a group of undergraduate students in the CA 271 Media Literacy course. This student-filmed documentary follows six college students who attempt to fast from their mobile devices and social media. The film explores these individuals’ reactions to the fast and their personal observations about media use and media literacy.

Civic Idea Workshop

Emerson Faculty and students will be conducting a workshop with the newly launched civic media literacy toolkit, Civic IDEA. Civic IDEA is a media literacy intervention to help build the capacity of youth to be more engaged citizens through the creation and distribution of media. Civic IDEA incorporates accessible technologies and a focus on connecting critical inquiry with active engagement in daily life. Youth who engage with the IDEA framework will learn to identify and investigate issues, deliberate around their values, express alternative narratives to current messages, and advocate for communities and issues that matter. In this event, we will use Civic IDEA to expand the capacity of media literacy to exhibit civic intentionality.

News Salon

During Media Literacy Week, put down your digital device and pick up a newspaper to discuss and debate current events with friends and classmates. Students in the Journalism Department’s newly-created Jour 365 News Literacy course are facilitating a news salon in the Oviatt Library Commons. Come hang out between classes to learn news literacy strategies and exchange your perspective about politics, culture and the arts. Capturing America

All members of the Hofstra University are invited to discuss how we “capture America” through our use of social media. Media Literacy week will culminate in a roundtable discussion of images, video, and text submitted to @hofmedialiteracy on Instagram.
