Media Literacy Town Hall

Earlier this year, State Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-IL) introduced HB5096, a bill calling for K-12 media literacy education in schools throughout the state of Illinois. As the bill gains momentum, we host an open discussion about the role media plays in our lives with students, teachers, and parents. Highlighting media literacy as an essential life skill and a critical component of a healthy democracy.

Film Screening: Election Day

Join the Albany Public Library for a screening of “Election Day.” Forget the pie charts, color-coded maps and hyperventilating pundits. What’s the street-level experience of voters in today’s America? In a triumph of documentary storytelling, POV’s Election Day combines 11 stories — shot simultaneously on November 2, 2004, from dawn until long past midnight — into one. Join NCTV’s Katy and Jen along with Norfolk PD’s Officer Michelle Palladini at the Norfolk Public Library and learn about how to keep yourself and your personal information safe on the internet. 

Propaganda Workshop: Visual Storytelling and Persuasive Technique

Teachers that are part of the Jacob Burns Film Center’s professional development community will dedicate one lesson plan during MLW to an application of the “Image, Sound, and Story” curriculum to media and propaganda. The JBFC is designing the lesson plan based upon a workshop it offers about visual storytelling and persuasive technique.

“Using the Community Loan Fund” – Media Literacy Week Edition! Come learn about the Community Loan Fund and what it can do for you. Members of this local organization will explain how the loan fund works, and provide examples of work the Loan Fund has done in the community, including funding assistance for local youth media organizations and more.

Social Media and Teens: Podcast

Teens will select topics of interest related to social media awareness and discover how to utilize podcast kits to record their own podcast at the library.

Fighting Fake: The Case for News Literacy

Join GMLP and headline speaker Peter Adams from New Literacy Project in Chicago for an evening of news literacy, food, and a cash bar! Peter will discuss the concept of news literacy and make the case for incorporating news literacy into our curriculums. All are welcome! This event is free and open to the public.

Mystery Lab: Media Literacy Edition

Think you can identify fake news? Have what it takes to report on a story? Come test your skills using a range of methods including video games, research challenges, and hands on activities. For tweens and teens at the library.

Film Screening: Mr. Soul

GMLP will host a screening of the film Mr. Soul! for the St. Louis International Film Festival during Media Literacy Week 2018! As part of this event with Cinema St. Louis, GMLP President Marteana Davidson will interview the co-director of the film, Melissa Haizlip. All are welcome! This event is free and open to the public.

How Media Literacy Makes the News Media Better at their Jobs

Each day of Media Literacy Week, PBS NewsHour Extra’s daily news stories will include a student-produced video from Student Reporting Labs’ “Misinformation Overload” series and a special #MediaLit activity that asks students to share honest feedback about the PBS news story they just viewed.
